The whole idea was to build excitement for the activity. I explained that there are upsets every year, so even if they know nothing about basketball, their chances are likely as good as the next person’s. Then, I even let them fill out their own brackets. If you tell students there are millions of dollars on the line, they are likely to get excited. Even casual fans in the room were making eI mentioned each year media outlets offer lots of money for anyone that can complete a perfect bracket. Therefore, to build excitement, I showed a 5-minute highlight video of past March Madness moments at the start of class. My students were not really basketball fans, and it is possible that yours will not be either. I chose eight short stories for my eighth graders to decide which story was to be called champion. So, I decided I wanted to make a tournament of my own. But if students feel YOUR passion, they are more likely to be engaged in their work. Students are not always excited about school, in fact, it’s rare for them to be excited about school these days. I have fond memories of this time of year watching great basketball and rewatching great March Madness moments.īecause of this passion, I wanted to incorporate it into my classroom.
